Welcome

Bristol Green Roots

Bristol’s Green Roots is a heritage lottery funded project that ran for a year to document Bristol’s history of environmental action, sustainability and social and environmental justice.

The project researched the different environmental organisations, initiatives and community groups that have developed in Bristol since the 1970s and the successes, set-backs, achievements and lessons learnt during this time.

Through the course of the project over 100 people were interviewed, including 26 filmed interviews, and the people, organisations. Initiatives and community groups interviewed were invited to donate archive material (leaflets, publications, newsletters).

The material gathered was then used to develop an exhibition in partnership with the Create Centre and a publication written by the project co-ordinator Emmelie Brownlee. These use the interviews and research to tell the stories of Bristol’s green heritage and explore the thoughts and perspectives of some of Bristol’s leading environmental individuals, organisations and groups about Bristol’s environmental past, present and future.

The archive will be stored at Bristol Record Office, the exhibition is in place at the Create Centre (free entry) and the publication is available from us, Foyles Bookshop in Cabot Circus or the Arnolfini Bookshop.
